Maysam Monawer

Description

Maysam is from the capital city of Khartoum, Sudan where she currently lives and works as a full-time artist.  Growing up in Khartoum the sandy landscape stands out in a place that’s representative of African and Arab cultures.  Artistically, the colors and forms etched in the surroundings helped create and environment that was the perfect canvas for expression.

A graduate of the College of Fine and Applied Art at Sudan University, she cultivated a skill-set that she used to catapult her career through workshops at the university and culture centers. Inspired by the world around her, specifically nature and the many cultures found in Sudan, she uses this inspiration as a way to communicate with those that may have never seen the landscapes of Sudan or experienced it first hand.

In her own words: “In my art, I look to put myself in front of the art.  I see it as a way of painting my feelings and emotions as if it was merged with nature vis-à-vis my inner being. Art and coloring gives me life. It’s a spirit that emerges that challenges the difficulties we encounter in life…in some cases, it’s a refuge.”
